Legendary Actor John Lithgow Breaks Two Records with Tony Award

John Lithgow won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play at the 79th Annual Tony Awards for his riveting and deep portrayal of children’s author Roald Dahl in Mark Rosenblatt’s drama, Giant - which dives into a dark chapter of Dahl’s life back in 1983 when he faced intense backlash over his antisemitic comments.

John is a three-time Tony Award winner - putting him in a special circle of only four actors who have won Tony Awards across three distinct acting categories.

Lithgow became the oldest competitive acting winner at the age of 80 years old, breaking the previous record - John last won a Tony 53 years ago in 1973 for The Changing Room.

What a great night it was for Cats: The Jellicle Ball - winning for Best Direction with Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch, And best choreography under the direction of Omari Wiles and Arturo Lyons.

Based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s worldwide phenomenon “Cats” is reimagined and ascends to Broadway in a kaleidoscope of glittering spectacle, iconic music and electrifying ballroom choreography.

NYC VIBE wishes congratulations to all of the nominees and winners.

Now back to the theater everyone, There is a show to put on…

The Material Girl Pop Up Concert in NYC Times Square

Thursday Night June 4, 2026 - NYC Times Square:

The material girl certainly showed she still has it - Madonna surprised many by performing an unannounced 15-minute pop-up concert high above in Times Square on Thursday evening.

The 67 year old music legend partnered with the gay dating app Grindr to host the event, drawing over 50,000 onlookers to kick off Pride Month and promote her newly announced 15th studio album, Confessions II.

The pop icon appeared on stage draped in a sheer pink-and-purple veil, then dramatically stripping down to show a custom Dolce & Gabbana outfit featuring a skintight lacy pink corset, blue bra, silver cropped jacket, and knee-high silver boots.

Between songs, the stage lights flashed the rainbow Pride flag while the giant Times Square billboards transformed into a massive screening room showing historical footage of LGBTQ+ activism and protest roots.

Madonna performed a high-energy mix of new material alongside some of her most celebrated dance-floor anthems.

Kara Young has cemented herself as a groundbreaking force on Broadway, becoming the first Black performer in history to receive four consecutive Tony Award nominations and to win back-to-back Tony Awards for Best Featured Actress in a Play.

Mike Leventhal caught up with his dear friend - Kara Young - as the two-time Tony Award® winner will soon depart the cast to focus on TV and movie projects.

Out now in theaters - Kara stars in “Is God Is”, where two sisters embark on an epic quest for revenge, confronting a charged family history that will push them to extraordinary lengths. The film is Aleshea Harris’ directorial debut and is based on Harris’ adaptation of her award-winning play of the same name.

Many Hollywood critics say this role will project Kara into another level in her sky bound career.

This year’s Drama Desk Awards were the largest gathering of Drama Desk winners and nominees, past and present, ever assembled for this celebration of artists, institutions, and communities that have defined seventy years of New York theater — from the Off-Off-Broadway movement to the great Broadway houses, from the city’s longest-running musicals to its boldest new work.

An exciting and heartfelt moment took place when actor and comedian Jon Cryer honored his mother - the acclaimed playwright and actress Gretchen Cryer for her theatrical achievements, most notably celebrating her winning a Dramatists Guild Lifetime Achievement Award.

An important topic on the red carpet was the small number of women directors working on huge Broadway performances - the number seems to be growing ever so slightly.

John Lithgow has won multiple Drama Desk Awards throughout his illustrious stage career, recently taking home the award for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Play for his acclaimed role in the Broadway production of Giant.

Marla Mindell is up for three Tony Awards for her creative work on Titanique which she told Mike that she still can’t believe…

...So now it’s on to the Tony Awards.
